Built From the Ground Up
Matt’s Custom Fence & Deck started with a simple goal: build a business that could support our family while creating work we were genuinely proud of. What began with Matt’s years of hands-on experience and an unexpected leap into entrepreneurship has grown into a company centered on craftsmanship, transparency, and doing things differently. We see decks and fences as more than construction—they are part of the architecture of a home and the way people live in it. As we grow, our vision is bigger than building beautiful outdoor spaces. We want to build a company that takes care of its clients, its employees, its community, and the people who helped create it—because how you build matters just as much as what you build.
My Story
I grew up in Utah, and construction has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. Starting around eight or nine years old, my summers were spent on job sites with my dad while he framed houses or helping my mom, an interior designer, with remodels. Without realizing it, I was learning both sides of building—how something is constructed and how people actually live in the finished space.
As I got older, I took a different path into restaurants and hospitality and worked my way toward becoming a Level II sommelier. I loved the industry, but when Kristi and I started our family, my priorities changed. Restaurant life meant nights, weekends and holidays away from home. Then we had twins, and the cost of childcare for two children made it financially unrealistic for both of us to work outside the home. I needed to support our family while also finding a way to be a present father.
That brought me back to construction—and eventually to the work I genuinely loved: designing and building decks. I’ve seen thousands of decks over the years and the same failures again and again. It made me obsessive about what people don’t always see: proper structure, extra support, the right fasteners and how solid something feels beneath your feet. I don’t just want a deck to look beautiful when we finish it. I want it built to last.
When we moved back to Utah, I looked for a fence and deck company I wanted to work for and realized I couldn’t find the kind of company I envisioned. I saw an opportunity to build it ourselves.
Matt’s Custom Fence & Deck started with handyman jobs and grew through the trust of our clients. Small projects became larger ones, clients came back, and referrals grew. What began as a way to support our family became a vision for something much bigger.
Today, we want to build more than beautiful fences and decks. We want to build a company where craftsmanship matters, clients trust our name, and employees can build real careers. I’ve worked for companies that push people until they burn out and replace them. I want ours to be different—livable wages, opportunities to grow, and eventually a path for longtime employees to have ownership in what they helped create.
We have big plans for Matt’s Custom Fence & Deck, but getting bigger has never been the point. We want to build beautiful spaces, create careers people are proud of, take care of the people who trust us, and build something that lasts.
Because what we build matters—and how we build it matters just as much.
